Project Overview
LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) is a professional learning solution aimed at empowering educators with the knowledge and skills to teach literacy effectively. Focused on the science of reading, the program equips educators with evidence-based strategies for teaching foundational reading skills and understanding how students learn to read. Lexia's goal with LETRS was to bridge the gap between research and classroom practice, offering educators a flexible, blended learning approach that combines online coursework, live training sessions, and application-based assignments.
My Role
I started this project with another designer on my team, sharing responsibilities for research, requirements gathering, and initial design direction. I eventually transitioned into a oversight role as I managed the team but still contributed design guidance and hands on feature work.

This included interviews, surveys, and observations to identify pain points in literacy instruction and professional development. Participant Architecture
The participant architecture is a simple course experience. Upon login, they see their active course and progress and can jump right back in to where they left off. Support features for a participant include a Journal, where they can review notes they've made during the course and Resources which provides additional reading, materials, lesson plans, and more.
Admin Architecture
The admin experience architecture has a bit more depth to it. State, district, school, and course administrators will login to see a dashboard for their appropriate level. If they have orgs below them, they'll have access to dive into those orgs dashboards and data as well. In addition to dashboards, admins can invite users and manage licenses for those users.

The Course Overview page allows participants to track progress and navigate through units. The sessions are laid out with approximate completion times. Sessions are unlocked as you complete the previous ones, however users can preview the lessons to get an idea of the cupcoming curriculum.

The Course Details page provides an in-depth view of each session. The outline on the left indicates the progress through the session and to allow for quick navigation. When working on a section, the estimated completion time is shown at the top. This detail was important to let participants know if they could complete parts of a session during their busy schedules, as many teachers were required to complete this course during school hours.

License sets have a specific start date and expiration date, meaning assigned participants would need to complete the course in the alloted time or a renewal would need to be purchased. Upcoming license sets are also visible and can be pre-assigned prior to their start date. Administrators needed a way to easily assign licenses to participants. This screen highlights each license set purchased and the usage of each, making sure they are getting the most use out of their purchase.

With this in mind we took our approach very seriously. I gained insights into balancing complex content and management features with an intuitive design to ensure understanding and effectiveness. Additionally, using platforms like UserTesting.com reinforced the value of iterative feedback and how small design adjustments can significantly enhance user experience. If a service like this is in the budget, it's well worth the investment.
