Trips

OVERVIEW

Trips provides drivers with a detailed record of their vehicle’s past movements and events, offering valuable insights into its activity. By reviewing trip history, users can see where the vehicle has traveled, including specific routes and destinations, and pinpoint when key driving events, such as hard braking, speeding, or stops, occurred. This feature not only helps users stay informed but also enhances safety, accountability, and convenience.

RESEARCH

When we spoke with prospective customers, we discovered that many were, or soon would be, parents of teens just starting to drive. This milestone brought added stress and highlighted a key need: the ability to track their vehicle’s trips. Parents wanted an easy way to monitor where their teens were driving, how far they traveled, and whether they were driving safely.

Beyond this, we learned that some drivers track work-related travel for expense reporting, others managed small business fleets, and a surprising few tracked their mileage much like keeping an old-fashioned checkbook. All of these cases could be facilitated through a feature in our app.

THE SOLUTION

tripsScreens

Trips can be accessed via the My Vehicle or Live Location pages. Users will see a list of trips and some basic details in reverse chronological order that can be filtered to a specific time range. Opening the trip will show a more detailed view of it and the ability to bring up a panel that shows trip statistics as well as any driving events or alerts that occurred during the trip like speeding, or hard braking.

OUTCOME

Connect is in a pre-release state but we have received feedback through testing from our own internal testing that has been positive and continue to make some improvements.

WHAT'S NEXT

The MVP version of Trips was fairly lightweight but we have plans to incorporate more functionality in the future. We plan to integrate with a speed limit service like Google's Roads API to color code the trip line to show the trip's speed as it compares to the speed limit. We also want to add the ability to log, send, or export trips out of the app for personal or business record keeping and reporting.
